Energy Savings Certificates for hotels, restaurants and shops in Tenerife

If your establishment has switched its lighting, upgraded its climate control, installed solar thermal panels or refurbished cold rooms since 2023, that energy saving has an economic value you can cash in. It's called an Energy Savings Certificate, and it's in Tenerife's tourism sector where it generates the most volume.

We speak your language, literally

Before moving into energy, Enrique Blanco worked in the kitchens of top-level restaurants in Spain and London. When he walks into a hotel kitchen, no one needs to explain what a blast chiller is or what time service starts: he knows where the electricity goes because he's been on the other side. You can meet the team here.

Why a hotel is the ideal candidate

For three very simple reasons: it consumes a lot, it consumes 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and it's constantly being renovated. The higher the starting consumption, the greater the certifiable saving from each improvement.

And there's a detail many people miss: you don't need to wait for the next renovation. Work already carried out since January 2023 can still be claimed.

What can be certified in a tourist establishment

  • LED lighting in rooms, corridors, common areas, car parks and outdoor spaces. Thousands of light points switched on almost permanently.
  • Heat pump climate control, running practically all year round.
  • Solar thermal for hot water and pools — with the island's sun and a hotel's hot water consumption, one of the most cost-effective measures here.
  • Kitchen refrigeration: cold rooms, compressors, refrigeration plants and chillers.
  • Display cabinets and units for direct sale, in supermarkets and food shops.
  • Automation and control (BACS) by room or by zone.
  • Building envelope and windows, using the Canary Islands-specific technical sheets.
  • Efficient pumps and variable speed drives in pools and water circuits.

It's common for a single establishment to combine several of these measures. Each one is processed with its own technical sheet, and the certificates add up.

And if you manage a fleet

Car rental, transfer and taxi companies also have their own technical sheets: replacing combustion vehicles with fully electric ones, telemetry and fleet management systems, and higher-efficiency tyres. On an island with the density of car rental companies that Tenerife has, the volume is considerable.

Residents' associations and apartment complexes

When the work is collective (façade, roof, street lighting, common-area climate control, pool), the measures can be grouped into a single application as long as they're carried out in the same year and the same autonomous region. That simplifies the process and multiplies the certified volume.

Frequently asked questions

We renovated the hotel with Next Generation funds. Can we still apply for a certificate?

Generally, yes: the scheme is compatible with most public grants. The exception is the part of the saving already subsidised through the National Energy Efficiency Fund, because the same saving can't be certified twice. We check this case by case before starting any paperwork.

How long does the process take?

It depends on the application, but the regional body in the Canary Islands is the Directorate General for Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands, which has 15 days to resolve standardised measures and 30 for bespoke ones from the emission request. On top of that comes preparing the application and prior verification.

What if our measure isn't in the catalogue?

It can still be processed as a bespoke measure, with a tailored technical report. The process is longer and more complex, but it's doable. We'll tell you from the start which of the two situations applies to you.
